Stephan began photographing in 1964. He was an assistant to Ansel Adams. Stephan has exhibited widely through 75 group and 20 solo shows. His work is included in a number of museums in the United States, Canada and France.

An unusually articulate teacher, Stephan shared his insights with students for over 30 years. He taught with Minor White in the graduate program at MIT, created programs of photography at four colleges and three private schools, served as a consultant to Polaroid Corporation in the product development and educational divisions, and traveled extensively conducting photographic workshops at colleges and universities.

In an addition to continuing photography, Stephan has been a citizen environmental activist, serving for over 22 years on many town, state committees and task forces dealing with environmental stewardship. He proudly served as an assistant to Nancy Anderson, Director of the New England Environmental Network at Tufts University.

Stephan expanded his need for an additional form of expression, and started metal sculpture in 2004.
