Stephan began photographing in 1964. He was an assistant to Ansel Adams. Stephan has exhibited widely through 75 group and 21 one man shows. His work is included in a number of museums in the United States, Canada and France. An unusually articulate teacher, Stephan shared his insights with students for over 30 years. He taught with Minor White in the graduate program at MIT, created programs of photography at four colleges and three private schools, served as a consultant to Polaroid Corporation in the product development and educational divisions, and traveled extensively conducting photographic workshops in colleges and universities. Stephan has been a citizen environmental activist serving for over 25 years on many town boards, state committees, and task forces.
